Actuator Operation

General Description
The motor {A} rotates the drive screw {B} by a synchronous timing belt drive,worm gear drive, or a coupling direct inline drive {C} connected from the motor shaft to the screw. The drive screw {B} is either an Acme,Vee or Ball, depending on the actuator model selected. The drive nut {D} is either Delrin AF, Bronze,or a ball nut, moves linearly along the screw. Thrust is transmitted from the drive nut, {D} to the translating tube {E}. The entire screw and nut assembly is protected from contamination and the environmental elements by the cover tube {F} and the end wiper seal {G}. Radial thrust bearings {H} allow the screw to freely rotate under loaded conditions. Some ACA actuators incorporate magnetic Reed Switches to protect the actuator from over travel in both extend and retract positions. All ACA actuator housings {I} are formed of aircraft-quality aluminum.

General
The ACA1M series is a very versatile and durable actuator, and is designed primarily for lighter load applications.

Stroke length
The ACA1M is available in stroke lengths of whole and fractional numbers from 0-12 inches.

Gearing
ACA1M series has standard Aluminum pulleys, with 1/5 pitch and ratios 1:1 and 2:1 for longer life and heavier loads. The letter {T} represents a timing belt.

Drive Screws
The ACA1M series incorporates 3 types of leadscrews: Ball {B} Acme {A} and Vee {V}

Drive Screw and Nuts

General Description
The lead screws used in ACA actuators are rolled screws with lead accuracy of +/- .003² to +/- .005² inch per foot of screw. Ground screws are available for a higher price. The ground screw lead error is +/- 0.0005² inch per foot of length, non- accumulative.

Lubrication is applied at the factory, with proper screw lubricants for the life of a particular actuator, {Ball, Acme, or Vee type}. ACA will lubricate for special applications as needed. i.e., extremely high or low temperatures or for vacuum operation.

Materials used throughout this catalog are as follows. {Acme, Vee 303 stainless steel} Ball screws are 1018 steel, hardened to RC65.

Designation of 3 screw types Acme{A} Vee{V} Ball{B} The number following the letter is the screw lead. Example V.05 is .050² lead = 20 pitch.

Pitch, this designates the number of threads per inch of screw, Example V.05 is a vee thread form with 20 threads per linear inch.

Screw Lead is the linear distance the screw drive nut will move for each revolution of the screw V.05 = 0.050² inch / revolution = 1.0² inch / 20 threads.

Efficiency (e) the screw efficiency is determined by measuring the torque required to rotate the screw in order for the drive nut to lift a known load.
 

e = load (Lbs.) x screw lead x 16 oz/lbs. -:- 2 pi x torque (oz/in.)

Screw Linear Velocity, all screw types are limited as to the speed to which a screw may be rotated. At a particular speed for a particular screw , the {critical velocity} of the screw will be reached, causing the screw to whip and vibrate, thereby becoming unstable and unusable. This critical velocity is a result of screw rotation speed, screw diameter, and screw length.

Drive Nuts
 



Ball Nuts: ACA Ball Nuts utilize high quality steel ball nuts with recirculating steel balls for long life and heavy loads.

Delrin AF Nuts are used in Acme and Vee screw types, for actuator loads under 500 lbs. Some advantages of this nut are its quiet running and low friction operation.

Bronze Nuts are used in Acme screws in applications where thrust requirements exceed 500 Lbs. Its main advantage is its heavy load capability.

    ACA actuators are driven by three types of gear reduction

    2. {W} represents a worm gear or {right angle} drive
